Nestled in the heart of Fremantle, the Warders Hotel offers a unique blend of history and contemporary comfort. Housed in the historic limestone cottages built in 1851 to accommodate Fremantle Prison warders and their families, the hotel provides an immersive heritage experience with all the modern luxuries today's travellers expect.

The Warders’ Block W1 stands as a testament to the Victorian Georgian style, showcasing the architectural brilliance of the 19th century. The cottages are part of the National Heritage List, emphasising their cultural significance. Matthew Crawford Architects faced the delicate task of preserving the historical essence while integrating modern amenities seamlessly.

Upon entering the hotel, guests are greeted with the sight of original timbers and stonework, complemented by contemporary handcrafted furniture from Mobilia. The careful restoration has maintained many original features such as wood-oven burners, window frames, and even the preserved internal staircases now encapsulated in cabinetwork.

“The challenge facing any adaptive re-use of such sensitive heritage is to ensure that not only does the fabric get retained but that the essence of the building is not lost. We approached the development of the hotel with this in mind and wanted to create an immersive heritage experience where patrons are well aware that they have just entered into a building from 1851.” - Matthew Crawford Architects

The highlight of the Warders Hotel bathrooms is the stunning Nood Co Hoop basins, showcased in Mint, Clay, and Sky Grey. These basins are complemented by natural stone surfaces and brass tapware, creating a blend of old and new.

To ensure the historical fabric remains intact, modern elements have been added with great care. Built-in beds keep the walls free, while surface-mounted copper conduits house electrical systems, adding to the aesthetic appeal. Lighting is designed to emulate the soft glow of candlelight, further enhancing the historical ambiance.

The hotel boasts 11 suites, each thoughtfully designed to offer comfort while preserving the historical integrity. The original doors and windows have been maintained, with new external door and window units layered over the originals to improve acoustic and insulation properties without compromising their character.

Each room features portraits of different women from the period, painted by local artist Tessa MacKay. These artworks add a personal touch, connecting guests with the rich history of the Warders Hotel.

The on-site restaurant and bar, Emily Taylor, continues the historical theme. Named after the wife of a spice-trade ship captain, the restaurant offers a Southeast Asian-inspired menu that complements the heritage setting.

The meticulous restoration and design have earned the Warders Hotel several accolades, including the 2021 WA Architecture Awards for Commercial Architecture, Heritage Architecture, and Lighting, as well as a State Heritage commendation.
