Nestled in the breathtaking surrounds of Wānaka, New Zealand, Scout Wānaka stands as a serene expression of modern alpine living. Designed by Sophie Bowers of Strutt Studios with construction by Owens Building and architecture by Intuitive Architects, the project is a considered blend of refined design, grounded materiality, and a deep connection to its setting. Based in Surry Hills, Australia, Strutt Studios is known for its contemporary, tactile approach - and Scout Wānaka is a luminous example of their design philosophy brought to life.

A Vision Rooted in Authenticity

From the outset, the project was driven by the idea of creating a home that felt deeply connected to the alpine landscape while still being refined and contemporary. Sophie mentions the desire for Scout to capture the raw beauty of Wānaka – its mountains, its ever-changing skies, its sense of calm – and translate this into an interior that felt warm, grounded, and quietly luxurious

A Design Approach That Feels Like Home

Sophie describes the design approach “The process began with an early sketch of the building’s form and the decision that oriented strand board would be the defining material of the interior. Both ideas held true through years of design development and became the anchors that informed every subsequent decision”. From there, the design unfolded in layers, balancing robust design gestures with refined detailing, and ensuring each choice felt authentic to the alpine-informed architecture. Equally important was the integration of both New Zealand and Australian made design products, a reflection of the project’s location and of the Strutt studio’s ethos of celebrating design talent across both countries.

A Favourite Feature: Framing the Natural

Among all the thoughtful details, Sophie highlights one favourite part of the project: the way the living spaces frame the dramatic mountain views. The interiors are intentionally calm and understated, allowing the landscape to take centre stage while providing a sense of ease and warmth for those inside. Similarly, the bathrooms were imagined as sanctuary-like retreats and spa-inspired spaces that invite rest and indulgence. “Through a careful balance of texture, light, and crafted details, they embody the same quiet luxury found throughout the home, offering moments of serenity within the wider alpine setting” says Sophie.

Why Nood Co. Was Chosen

When selecting fittings and finishes, Sophie and the Strutt team were drawn toward Nood Co. for one simple reason, refined concrete forms that strike a balance between sculptural beauty and everyday function. Our Nood Co. Millie and Hoop Cylinder and surface mount basins in our Nood colour way offer the perfect mix of texture, colour and sustainability, aligning with Scout’s material palette and ethos. Knowing that Nood Co. products are designed and handcrafted in Australia added to the appeal, as it allowed the design team to support a brand with shared values around design integrity and environmental responsibility.

A Milestone Project

For Strutt Studios, Scout Wānaka marks a milestone - not just in geographical reach, but in creative evolution. The project embodies the studio’s design values of thoughtful, timeless interiors that respond to place.

Sophie shares that they are “proud that the project has been recognised with awards for interior design, architecture and master building - a rare trifecta that reflects the calibre of collaboration and craftsmanship involved.” She added that “guests can experience Scout for themselves by staying in the home as a luxury holiday rental,” noting that more details are available at scout-wanaka.com.
